Looking for success in all the wrong places

"(When considering a life change), we let our fears govern our decisions. Rather than challenging the validity of those fears, we accept the boundaries set by those fears, and end up confining our search to a narrow range of possibilities, like the guy looking for his car keys under the streetlight because he's afraid of the dark." Po Bronson.

While I was driving to my office, I hear this on Morning Edition of NPR from Po BronsonĀ“s book What Should I Do With My Life?

This poses one serious question. How do you define your own success and fulfillment? But sometimes success is like Po suggests… you are looking in all the wrong places, how can this be transported to an organization? How many organizations are afraid of looking in the dark spot of the parking lot?

This makes me recall something my father said to my sister and I; "Something is lost because it's not where you think it is" So… Where is you success lost?

"sound clouds" and acoustical manipulation

You're redesigning a concert hall, and you want its shape to do a good job of projecting the musicians' music into the audience. The problem, though, is that your hall will feature many different types of music — operas, rock shows, and a symphony or two. Each has its own acoustical needs, and the shape of the ceiling will affect the concert profoundly. What if you could custom-fit the shape of the ceiling, like a custom basketball shoe molds around the foot, or like a wedding dress is tailored to a bride? How could you make this work?

At San Francisco's Davies Hall, they solved this by creating a fully movable ceiling, made up of 59 flexible Plexiglass tiles, which — thanks to computers and a series of winches and cables — adjust to custom fit the type of concert. They create a "tunable sound shell," which the producers can "tailor ... to the ensemble and provide more immediacy to the musicians and the audience."
